Destinations worth the journey
From the Mara's golden plains to Swahili islands and gorilla forests — discover where your next diary entry will be written.

Masai Mara
Head west from Nairobi across the Great Rift Valley to the Masai Mara, home to some of the highest predator densities in Africa. Spend full days exploring the open savannah with an experienced driver-guide in a pop-up roof 4x4, tracking lion prides, cheetah and leopard, and — between July and October — the dramatic river crossings of the Great Migration.

Amboseli
Amboseli is famed for its big-tusked elephants and the classic view of Africa's highest mountain rising above the plains. Swamps fed by Kilimanjaro's snowmelt attract buffalo, hippo, zebra, wildebeest and hundreds of bird species.

Tsavo
Together, Tsavo East and West form one of the largest protected areas in Africa. Tsavo East is known for its red-dust elephants and open plains, while Tsavo West offers lava flows, Mzima Springs and the Ngulia hills. It is ideally combined with a beach stay on the coast.

Samburu
Samburu's semi-arid landscapes are home to species rarely found further south — the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk. Leopard sightings along the river are a highlight, as is meeting the colourful Samburu community.

Rift Valley Lakes
A perfect short break from Nairobi in the Rift Valley lakes. Lake Nakuru National Park is a rhino sanctuary with both black and white rhino, while Lake Naivasha offers boat rides among hippos and a walk on Crescent Island. Add a cycling safari through Hell's Gate's gorges.

Mount Kenya
Ascend Mount Kenya via the gentle Sirimon route and descend through the spectacular Chogoria route, passing glacial tarns, the Gorges Valley and alpine moorland dotted with giant groundsel and lobelia. Led by certified mountain guides with porters and a cook.

Diani Beach
Unwind on Diani's famous beach with optional excursions to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park for snorkelling and dolphin spotting, Shimba Hills for forest wildlife, or a sunset dhow cruise.

Lamu
Lamu Old Town is one of the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlements in East Africa. Wander its narrow streets on foot or by donkey, sail on traditional dhows and relax on the long beaches of Shela.

Zanzibar
Combine the winding alleys of Stone Town with a spice tour and days on Zanzibar's northern beaches. A perfect add-on after a Kenyan safari.

Uganda
Trek through Bwindi's misty rainforest with expert trackers to spend a magical hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family. Gorilla permits are limited and should be secured well in advance.

Rwanda
Rwanda offers easy access to mountain gorillas from Kigali. Combine your gorilla trek with golden monkey tracking and a city tour of Kigali.
